Special projects 2021
Jan Frederik De Cock and his tribute to René Magritte |
MAGRITTE HALL
7-15/08/2021 |
Something very special is happening in the Magritte Room, where Magritte's masterpiece "The Enchanted Domain" will arouse everyone's admiration. Master sculptor Jan De Cock has installed his GESAMTWERKSTATT MAGRITTE/DE COCK there, which reminds one of an artist's studio and immediately raises a number of pertinent questions and contemporary issues.
Jan De Cock is the only living Belgian artist to have had a solo exhibition in both the MoMA in New York and the TATE MODERN in London. He has been nominated for the Belgian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2022 and was last seen in Belgium during his solo show at BOZAR in 2009. Following the Centre Pompidou Paris, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, this summer he will now feature in the Magritte Hall of the Grand Casino Knokke during the KNOKKE ART FAIR. The project, or rather the exhibition, is an exuberant and formal baroque ensemble of allusions, reminiscences and objects that are works of art, but also a profound meditation on the contemporary status of the artist and the problems associated with social distancing and digitisation in this age of pandemics. The artist's studio has always been a place of creativity and at the same time a place of creation, reflection, teaching, exchange and meeting between artists, scholars and the public, as well as a place of refuge.

Ceci n’est pas un salon d’art.
In this era of viewing art virtually, visiting museums digitally or trading art, the studio has lost some of its fundamental characteristics and qualities and has been forced to relinquish its essential and fundamental role in the representation and interpretation of image and thought, of material surroundings and spiritual endeavours. In this time of restrictions imposed by a virus, it is essential to (self-) critically question the medium of exposition and the concept of exhibiting in the context of GESAMTWERKSTATT MAGRITTE/DE COCK. Indeed, the corona pandemic could pose an existential threat to the exhibition and the collection of art, whether by artists, galleries, art dealers or collectors. Jan De Cock's ambitious and overall impressive installation is a tribute to the visual arts and sends out an intriguing message. The KNOKKE ART FAIR organisation aims to offer visitors not only a glimpse of the current art market but also an international view of the future art landscape.

28th Sculpture Link
|
SEA DYKE KNOKKE-HEIST
15/06 - 15/08/2021 |
The 28th edition of Sculpture Link, which takes place from 15 June to 15 August, is one of physical tension, monumental rhythm, and a literally and figuratively intense sublimity, created by the French sculptor Nicolas Lavarenne.
The human figure is central to the artist's work, but in a very special way. People often talk about 'échassiers', stilt walkers, three-legged trunks, and long stems when one wants to situate or describe his figures. |
This refers, in our opinion, at least as far as the reference to the stilt walkers is concerned, mainly to his first bronze figures in which the legs of the characters are extended to such an extent that rays or spindles finally seem to grow from the feet and rest on the ground, as is the case with stilt walkers to some extent. Gradually, however, the bodies of his characters are caught, gripped, and surrounded by long metal sticks that accompany the characters and toss them on high. Thus, to a certain extent, his figures resemble spiders that rest in their web for a long time, the web turning out to be an ethereal cage, a structure of elongated rods clamped by the floating figures, creating an image of alienation.
The walk or bike ride runs from Het Zoute along the Zeedijk in the direction of Heist-West (or vice versa), on the way you'll find the Grand Casino, where the KNOKKE ART FAIR will take place from 7 to 15 August. You can get acquainted with the oeuvre of Nicolas Lavarenne in the booth of Gallery Ysebaert, which represents the artist, during the KNOKKE ART FAIR.

Exhibitors 2021
Latin-American art - Galeria de las Misiones
Galeria de las Misiones, which we know from Art Brussels and ARCO Madrid, brings an exquisite and qualitative selection of Latin-American art. You will be able to admire paintings from Carlos Carnero, originating from Montevideo (Uruguay).
This artist moved to Paris in the ’40’s, where he worked wtith André Lhote and Fernand Léger. Even after Léger’s death, Carnero remained at the head of the workshop. Also we can notice references to his contacts with Picasso and Mirò in his works. He was a member of the post war Tachism movement, such as Hartung & Soulages, just before he evolved toward the abstract style.
The marble sculptures from Pablo Atchugarry resist the evolution of times and are represented in many international foundations and museums, even in the museum of Bruges. |
South-Korean - Artskoco
The deeply routed passion for South Korea from Mr. & Mrs. Duplay comes to a statement at the ArtKoco booth.
Hoon Moreau, born in Seoul, started her quest to find the equilibrium between the functional and the artistic aspect of her creations, after her studies as designer in Paris. On an intimate matter, natural elements are elevated to artworks. The painting of Jang Kwangbum however, deserve some of your time while participating in his journey to eternity. The endless sea, therefore, is present in the paintings from Sung-Pil Chae, an artists who is represented in the city hall of Paris, the Seoul Museum of Art and the BNP collection.

The ArtAssistant lounge is the only place at the KNOKKE ART FAIR where the face mask can be taken off while relaxing with a complimentary drink. 'Facing each other' is the actual theme of the exhibition where character heads are put central. Both figurative and abstract paintings are present, besides photography. This is combined with intimate and breathtaking sculptures in bronze and marble.
